The left side is dominated by a heavy, towering mass of ancient, abstract foliage, which slopes downward gracefully toward the right to frame a solitary, 1/8-scale chrysalis suspended in the night sky. Magical May Sunset is the second entry in the ongoing Appalachian Range Series, building upon the landscape narrative that began with Cataloochee Valley Elk. Inspired by a striking landscape photograph by Thomas Mabry, this piece represents an explosive shift upward from the valley floor into pure, high-chroma atmospheric drama.
The work is a masterclass in structural value and non-literal, Fauvist-inspired color relationships. To prevent the intense, blinding solar engine from neutralizing into muddy tones as it meets the upper sky, an intermediate gradient field of soft mint and turquoise was painstakingly built, resulting in a luminous, iridescent glow. Below, the ancient mountain ridges are rendered in dense, recessive indigos and deep Prussian blues, completely transformed by a delicate, pale violet-pink valley fog that has been dry-brush scumbled across the canvas tooth to mimic heavy, rolling southern humidity.

The Vision: Cosmic Cycles, Equity, and Renewal
I draw inspiration from the rich and varied terrains of the United States and the British Isles, with a particular focus on the American West, the vibrancy of the skies, and the fluid grace of flowing streams and waterfalls. My aesthetic is defined by a bold, distinctive approach to color and light, often blending hues not typically found in nature to create a compelling visual dialogue. I view color as the heartbeat of my art, using it to create a tapestry of familiarity and imagination.
At the core of my artistic vision is a deep reflection on the sacred cycles of creation, destruction, and renewal. I am fascinated by the eternal rhythm of birth, death, and potential rebirth that pervades the Cosmos and our natural world. My work seeks to capture this possibility of regeneration amidst decay, offering a lens through which we can find hope and resilience.
While landscapes are my primary subject, I also explore figurative work, animal studies, and still lifes. My foundational practice—built through private lessons and institutional education—emphasizes an intensive study of complementary and contrasting hues, allowing me to continually refine my craft.
