The Story Behind the Piece
Growing up, family history was not tucked away in a scrapbook—it lived right on the living room wall. Mounted in my great-grandmother’s home was an enormous set of horns belonging to Kalamazoo, a beloved steer and traveling mascot for the Texas Kid’s Reproduction of Frontier Days.
Throughout the 1930s, "The Show"—one of America’s last genuine traveling Wild West shows—toured across Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Oklahoma. Life happened on the road; my father was born mid-circuit in 1933 and attended a new school nearly every week until World War II gas rationing brought the family home to their spread in Burleson, Texas. My grandfather, the "Texas Kid," was an early member of the Cowboys' Turtle Association, riding bareback and saddle broncs twice at Madison Square Garden.
Whenever wide-eyed visitors gazed up at the massive trophy, my great-grandmother would tell them with a straight face: “Oh, the rest of Kalamazoo is just on the other side of the wall.”
