Measuring a commanding 24" x 24", this work features a masterfully balanced 2/3 asymmetrical composition. The left side is dominated by a heavy, towering mass of ancient, abstract foliage, which slopes downward gracefully toward the right to frame a solitary, 1/8-scale chrysalis suspended in the night sky. At the heart of this delicate vessel sits an intense, blinding white portal of light—a literal tear in the canvas that commands the eye and radiates an otherworldly, bioluminescent glow across the surrounding wild vines.
Technical Craftsmanship & Medium
Every element of this painting has been executed with meticulous intention, combining vivid Fauvist color choices with dreamlike, Surrealist atmosphere:
The Surface: Painted using high-quality gouache on canvas. The canvas was uniquely prepared with a custom watercolor ground layered over gesso to fill the tooth completely, resulting in a rich, velvety, and matte finish with absolutely zero canvas speckles.
The Palette: A striking "optical bounce" created by a highly pigmented, surreal acid blue and vibrant chartreuse highlights, anchored by the cold, ink-like inkiness of deep Prussian blue shadows.
The Celestial Detail: Moving away from unpredictable textures, the night sky features a hand-painted celestial map. Using a micro-pointed detail brush, individual star points and cosmic clusters were meticulously placed using a luminous mixture of permanent white and metallic silver. When ambient light catches the room, these stars physically gleam and twinkle against the flat matte background.
